Optometrist
Optometrist is a professionally trained health care professional who provide comprehensive eye and vision care.
Optometrists provide primary vision and eye care to the community.
Specifically, they
- assess vision
- screen, detect and manage visual and ocular problems
- refract
- prescribe and dispense spectacles, contact lenses and vision therapy
- prescribe and dispense other special visual aids
- provide advice on visual behaviour
- provide advice on visual ergonomics
In Hong Kong, optometrists must be registered with the Optometrists Board before they can practice,the register are divided into 4 parts, namely, Part I, Part II, Part III and Part IV.
Various parts of the optometrist registration:
Part I
Registration
- Qualifications for registration: (a) a Bachelor of Science Degree in Optometry awarded by the Hong Kong Polytechnic or The Hong Kong Polytechnic University; (b) a Professional Diploma in Optometry issued by the Hong Kong Polytechnic; (c) a Certificate of Attainment in Ocular Pharmacology issued by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University; and has practised for one year or more after having been registered as a Part II optometrist, or has other experience that is recognized by the Board.
- Restrictions on the practice: No restrictions, can use any diagnostic agent approved by the Board.
- Scope of services: Comprehensive eye examination, includes, spectacles dispensing and contact lens fitting, color vision test, binocular vision assessment and vision training, pupil dilated eye exam, comprehensive ocular health assessment.
Part II
Registration
- Qualifications for registration: (a) a Higher Certificate in Optometry issued by the Hong Kong Polytechnic; or (b) a certification from the Board that he has passed an examination in optometry conducted under the Ordinance.
- Restrictions on the practice: Shall not in the course of practising his profession use any diagnostic agent other than staining agents.
- Scope of services: spectacles dispensing and contact lens fitting, color vision test, binocular vision assessment and vision training, ocular health assessment.
Part III
Registration
- Qualifications for registration:
a certification from the Board that he has passed an examination in optometry conducted under the Ordinance. - Restrictions on the practice:
Shall not in the course of practising his profession perform any function or engage in any activity other than work relating to refraction. - Scope of services:
refraction and spectacles dispensing.
Part IV
Registration
- Qualifications for registration: a certificate of provisional registration has been issued under section the Ordinance.
- Restrictions on the practice: Shall not in the course of practising his profession perform any function or engage in any activity other than work relating to refraction or refraction and contact lenses, as appropriate.
